New Year’s Resolution Update #1
by john on Feb.03, 2010, under Self Experimentation
Last year I didn’t really make a list or had any in mind, but this year I feel like I can actually accomplish most if not all of the changes I would like to accomplish in 2010.
So as a reference here are my 2010 New Year’s resolutions:
- Move out of NYC (finally!).
- Get a dog (preferably a Labrador Retriever pure or mixed).
- Quit smoking indefinitely.
- Work out and get my body to the point of FBI Special Agent PT standards (after I quit smoking of course).
- Go on “slow carb” diet via Tim Ferris method.
- Work on projects in software development and other technology related areas.
- Learn a new computer programming language or scripting language.
- Get at least one Microsoft certification.
- Do at least one thing that makes me feel afraid or have anxiety per week to condition myself for being out of my comfort zone.
- Severely cut down on video games (they’re fun, but I feel I could do more productive things at this point in my life).
- Be more social and re-connect with people I used to be close to.
- Maximize monetary income with less effort (currently, it seems the opposite at this point).
- Get a second daily driver vehicle.
- Tinker and learn more about vehicles.
- Be generally calmer and desensitized with situations beyond my control.
- Be more cerebral and logical with daily situations.
- Finish reading “The 4-Hour Work Week” and other instructional books throughout the duration of the year.
- Officially start a small business (this one is hard, I don’t even know what industry, but I’ll see what I can muster).
- Drink more water!!!
- Stop giving out freebie IT consulting advice and computer tech work.
- Find a career position worthy of my degree.
- Pay off all my credit cards that are over $1000.

I have a lot of similar goals…quit smoking? Check!
To do? Get a dog (adoption preferred), start taking classes again in preparation for grad school, go back on south beach (best diet IMO and similar to Ferris’), and hit the gym 3x/week @ 30 minutes a visit.
That aughta do it, haha.

I believe some of the goals you’ve crossed off are ones that can’t just be deemed “done.” Ones that you should just keep up the whole year and make sure you continue to do them.
Drink more water, free IT consulting, and especially do one thing a week that puts you out of your comfort zone.

The ones crossed out aren’t really “done”. It just means they have been integrated into my normal daily routine. I might have to tweak this for next year as well.
